Atlantic Forest

Exactly in the center of the Atlantic Forest Biome, between the South of the state of Bahia and the north of the state of Espirito Santo, there is a forest of the most relevant and significant for conservation, the Forest of the Coastal Tracks, which occurs from Pernambuco to the State of Rio de Janeiro, but its imposing area is in the Hileia Baiana.

Programa Arboretum

The Arboretum Program aims at the conservation, restoration and enhancement of the tree diversity of the Atlantic Forest, through the promotion and diffusion of knowledge.

Hileia Baiana

Exactly in the center of the Atlantic Forest, covering the south of the state of Bahia and the north of the state of Espírito Santo, is a forest of the most relevant and significant for conservation, which is home to one of the greatest diversity of tree species on the planet, the Forest of Coastal Tracks.

Known as Hileia Baiana due to its similarity to the Amazon rainforest due to the constantly hot and humid climate, the predominantly sandy soil, large trees, dense forest and species common to both environments.

A Procura-se
A Memória da Mata

The Memory of the Forest

In respect to the diverse life that has evolved over millions of years and to the giant and millennial beings that inhabit and inhabit this region, Projeto Memória da Mata seeks to keep this richness alive in the memory, to make known the exuberance of the forest of Hileia as a tool to restore the values and the forest.

Seeds

To learn more about seed diversity, you can access our database, learn more about each time through the catalog and know availability. Below, some species available:

Seed Network

The Hileia Seed Network, brings together more than 40 collectors distributed in 7 traditional rural communities. The Network presents a work with high diversity of forest species, promotes the valorization of native species, control and quality guaranteed through a Laboratory of Seeds and Storage Chambers.

Rede de Sementes da Hileia

Seedlings

The program produces more than 500 native forest species, among them: rare, endemic and endangered species. To learn more about the species, access our catalog and get information. Examples of species currently in production are:

Network of seedlings

The work of seedling production in the Program began in 2014. The Network currently consists of 4 nurseries and the central nursery at the Forest Base, inaugurated in 2017. The seedlings produced meet the technical standards of quality and legal criteria in production and commercialization.

Rede de Mudas da Hileia

Planting

Forest plantations are developed by the Arboretum Program with the objective of restoring/recomposing and valuing the diversity of Hileia Baiana.

What to plant and where?

According to the objectives of the planting and according to the conditions of the place where we want to plant we can select the most suitable species and the most appropriate methodology.

Arborets

Within the scope of the Program, the arborets mainly deal with three demands: silvicultural knowledge of native tree species; seed bank for restoration; and conservation of the genetic diversity of populations of endangered, rare or endemic species. The Program has an Arboretum in the Forest Base and is structuring dispersed arborets in the territory, in the Nucleus areas and in areas of goodwill owners.

Arboretos

Forest Restoration

The Program works in forest restoration through Agroforestry Systems-SAFs using native forest species and through dense plantations to restore permanent preservation areas with high species diversity.

Forestry and Economic Use

There is some consensus as to the existence of a large stock bank sheltered in a tropical forest. Although precariously measurable, there is the recognition that such space harbors values to be potentially exploited in a sustainable way.

Environmental Education Program

One of the objectives of the Arboretum Program is to contribute to educational processes that sensitize people to conservation and restoration of forest biodiversity and beyond the relationship with the forest, and inspired by it to collectively build social values that foster human relationships with the environment.
